UNIT THREE: Still Life and Observational Drawing

In this unit of work you will be focus on drawing, specifically observational drawing from a Still Life. You will learn and review basic drawing techniques andwork towards the production of your first portfolio pages for your IGCSE coursework.
Observational Drawing Tasks
1: A3 obsevational drawing of a NATURAL FORM (provided) using pencil. You are to use previously learnt methods. This task will function as a pretest to show what you know and what you still need to learn.
2: Observational drawing of a ROUND OBJECT on an A3 page in pencil. You are to use the sighting and measuring technique - demonstration will be given in class.
3: Observational drawing of TWO ROUND OBJECTS on an A3 page in pencil, using the "crate" technique - demonstration will be given in class.
4: Observational drawing of a bottle on an A3 page in pencil, use techniques and enlarge using a 1-1.5 ratio.

Natural Treasures - Portfolio Page 1
TASK: You are to produce 1 x A3 Portfolio Page based on the theme of Natural Forms. Use class resources and your own to complete a series of 12 drawings. You will select the best 9 drawings and arrange on a new A3 page. Student choice on the organisation of the page - drawings may be arranged organically or in a more structured format eg in a frame, approximately 8 x 12 cms. You are to use a range of media and techniques - below is an introductory list.
  1. One drawing of a natural form using Graphite pencil;
  2. One drawing of a natural form in pen, focusing on line;
  3. One drawing of a natural form using black and white pencil on newspaper;
  4. One drawing of a natural form using Graphite pencil and white paint on an acrylic wash;
  5. One drawing of a natural form using white charcoal on a black acrylic ground (black paint);
  6. One drawing of a natural form using white acrylic paint and black pen on a black acrylic ground;
  7. One drawing of a natural form using coloured pencils;
  8. One watercolour painting of a natural form;
  9. One artwork of a natural form pressed into modelling compound and worked over using acrylic paint;
  10. One drawing of a natural form using Indian ink and white paint on an Indian ink wash;

MATERIALS/MEDIA: A selection of Natural forms such as shells, coral, seaweed, driftwood, leaves, dried flowers, seed pods, interesting twigs, bark, pinecones, pebbles, stones, bones, feathers etc. You will be using a combination of drawing media such as graphite pencil coloured pencil, Indian Ink, White and black paint, collage techniques and modelling paste.
